Planning Your New Home

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Nothing else is quite as exciting as moving into a new place. Whether you’re going to rent a house, condo or apartment or you are taking the next big step and buying or building a home of your own, you have plenty to do. Long before you choose the place, it’s time to start planning your new home. The more effort you put into making the right decision up front, the better off you’ll be when it’s time to move in. If you are renting or buying an existing dwelling, then you have criteria it will need to meet. Create a checklist up front. List the necessities, things the home must have like three bedrooms, two baths and a garage. Then, list the luxuries, things you would really enjoy the home having, like a pool, a sunken living room or a fenced back yard. The more extensive your checklist, the easier it will be for you to find the home or the house plan and lot that will best suit your needs.

Planning your new home is about more than checklists, though. It involves financial decisions including saving up the money for a rental deposit and the first/last months rent if you’re going to go that route. It involves even more saving up if you are going to apply for a mortgage. You’ll need a down payment, closing costs and possibly other extras to qualify for that loan. Thinking through the moving, and financing processes as well as your desires for the dwelling is not a solo occupation. If you’re married, you need to discuss all the aspects of the new home with your spouse. If you have children, consult them, too. Moving to a new place can be fun, challenging and exciting, and a lot easier… if you plan ahead.
